This Isn't a Heritage Tour or a Trip to Israel

You've likely already done Israel — a Birthright of your own, a family bar or bat mitzvah trip, a synagogue mission. That story is told. This isn't a retelling of it.

And it isn't the other well-worn path either: a grandmother's shtetl, a cemetery, a museum that only tells you how it ended. Most Jewish trips outside Israel are built around history — often grief-shaped history — led by a scholar, walked through with a headset, finished with a gift shop.

It's Always About:
  • — Genealogy research and cemetery visits, built for tracing where you came from
  • — Holocaust-centered itineraries that end the story in loss, not growth
  • — Lecture-driven days with a scholar or rabbi, not real women from real communities
  • — Mixed-generation or mixed-gender groups where you're managing everyone else, again
A quiet, reflective moment

Grow Your Jewish Identity — Not Just Discover Your Roots

This trip starts from a different question — not where did my family come from, but who am I now, as a Jewish woman, in this chapter. The one after the carpool line, after the school events, after two decades of being needed by everyone else first.

This Is About:
  • ✓ Real conversations with Jewish women across Portugal — in Lisbon, in Belmonte, in the Douro Valley — not museum plaques
  • ✓ A small group of women in your exact life stage, so nothing needs to be performed
  • ✓ The Growth Travel Method — built around identity, reflection, and perspective, not sightseeing checkboxes
  • ✓ Space to ask what your Jewish identity means to you now — and come home with an answer, not just photos

The Journey: Portugal

From Lisbon to Serra da Estrela, from Belmonte's hidden community to the Douro Valley and Porto — the Jewish story of Portugal told through the women who kept it alive, not just the ones who wrote it down.

Day 1
Lisbon

Arrival & a First Walk Through Lisbon

Settle into Lisbon and gather as a group over a welcome dinner after an easy first walk through Baixa and Chiado. A gentle first night to meet the women you'll spend the next ten days with.

Lisbon baking class
Day 2
Lisbon

Jewish Lisbon, a Baking Class & Real Conversations With Local Women

A morning through Lisbon's Jewish quarter and its memorial sites, then a hands-on pastéis de nata baking class. The heart of the day comes in the afternoon: an unhurried, unscripted gathering with local Lisbon Jewish women over coffee — no docent, no itinerary, just conversation.

Kayaking in Arrábida Natural Park
Day 3
Lisbon

The Wild Coast of Arrábida, Then Lisbon by Night

Cross the river to Arrábida Natural Park for a morning on the water — kayaking or canyoning along a coastline of pine-covered cliffs and turquoise water — followed by a seaside lunch. Back in Lisbon, visit Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower before an evening of Fado in Alfama, the music that carries the city's own long memory.

Tomar Synagogue entrance
Day 4
Serra da Estrela

A 15th-Century Synagogue & Candlelight in the Mountains

Travel north to Tomar to see one of Portugal's oldest surviving synagogues, then continue into the Serra da Estrela mountains. As evening falls, gather for a Kabbalat Shabbat celebration — live music, candlelight, and a farm-to-table dinner under the stars.

Monsanto, the boulder village
Day 5
Serra da Estrela

Portugal's Highest Point & the Village Built From Boulders

A scenic drive to mainland Portugal's highest point, with stops at viewpoints along the way (an optional hike or e-bike route for anyone who wants it), then an afternoon wandering Monsanto — a village so woven into its own granite boulders that stone forms the walls, roofs, and streets themselves.

Boat ride on the Douro River
Day 6
Belmonte & the Douro Valley

The Women Who Kept a Community Alive in Secret for 500 Years

This is the heart of the journey. In Belmonte, meet a Jewish community that survived in hiding for nearly five centuries after a forced-conversion edict — sustained the entire time not by rabbis or texts, but by the women who quietly carried its practice, mother to daughter, until the community found its way back into the light. From there, continue into the Douro Valley for a vineyard lunch and a river cruise through one of the world's oldest wine regions, ending with an evening at leisure among the terraced hills.

Day 7
Douro Valley & Porto

A Slow Morning Among the Vines, Then On to Porto

Wake up without an alarm and let the morning stretch out among the vineyard's own grounds before an unhurried drive into Porto. An easy day, built deliberately as a breath after yesterday's depth — the evening is yours, to explore Ribeira at your own pace.

Porto's Ribeira district
Day 8
Porto

A UNESCO City on Foot, and a Toast to How Far You've Come

Walk Porto's UNESCO-listed old town — its grand station, its towers, its cathedral — then cross the river for a guided tasting in the historic port wine cellars. As night falls, a cocktail and tapas crawl through Ribeira closes out the day.

Buçaco National Forest staircase and fountain
Day 9
Porto

Canal Boats in Aveiro & a Farewell Dinner

A day trip to Aveiro for a ride along its canals and a wander through its Art Nouveau streets, then into the quiet, cedar-lined paths of Buçaco National Forest. Back in Porto, the trip closes with a farewell dinner together — a last shared table before tomorrow's goodbyes.

Departure

A final morning at leisure — a last walk, a last coffee with the women who, ten days ago, were strangers — before departure.

This itinerary reflects our current plan for the Portugal journey, built from real, verified routing and experiences — but it is a working plan, not a fixed contract. Site hours, holiday and Shabbat calendars, the availability of the local guides and community women who host us, and weather conditions in the mountains and along the coast can all shift the order, timing, or content of individual days between now and departure. Where a change is needed, we make it to protect the quality, safety, and pacing of the experience — never to cut corners — and we'll always communicate it directly rather than let you discover it on arrival.

What Other Women Ask Before Saying Yes

These are the honest questions almost every woman has before a trip like this. Here's the honest answer to each.

"Is it selfish to take a trip that isn't for my family?"
Ten days for yourself after twenty years of putting everyone else first isn't selfish — it's overdue. Women consistently come home more present, not less, because they've had room to actually hear themselves think.
"Will I be the only one who doesn't feel 'spiritual enough' for this?"
No. Most of the women on this trip aren't coming from deep religious study — they're coming from the same place you are: curious about what their Jewish identity means to them now, without needing to already have the answer.
"Will the group be too religious, or not Jewish enough, for me?"
This is built for women across the spectrum of Jewish practice and affiliation — Reform, Conservative, and everywhere in between. What everyone shares is the life stage and the openness to grow, not a specific level of observance.
"What does my husband think about a women-only trip?"
This isn't a trip away from your marriage — women consistently describe coming home more grounded and more present with their partner, not less. You're not opting out for a week; you're bringing something back.
"Haven't I already done the 'Jewish trip'?"
If you've done Israel, this is intentionally not that trip again. It's not genealogy, and it's not Holocaust history — it's your identity today, in a different setting, with different questions.
"Is this really worth the investment?"
This isn't a sightseeing package — it's a curated, small-group experience built around real access (private guides, real conversations with local Jewish women, thoughtfully designed reflection) that you can't book piecemeal on your own.

Built by Women, for This Exact Chapter

This journey wasn't designed by a tour company checking boxes on a Jewish heritage circuit. It was built by women who understand this specific moment — the one after the kids leave, when the question of who you are, apart from every role you've held, finally has room to be asked.

Every detail, from the pacing of each day to the communities we visit, was built around one goal: giving you the space to grow into this next chapter, not just tour through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this trip actually for?+

Jewish women roughly in their late 40s to early 60s, most often with grown or nearly-grown children, looking for a meaningful trip focused on identity and growth rather than sightseeing or genealogy. You don't need a synagogue title or a specific level of observance — just curiosity about this next chapter.

How is this different from a Momentum or Federation Israel trip?+

This is intentionally not Israel, and not a repeat of a trip you've likely already taken. It's built around Portugal's living and historic Jewish communities and your identity today — a different destination and a different question entirely.

Is this a religious or observant trip?+

No single level of observance is expected. Kosher-friendly and gluten-free dining is available throughout, and Shabbat is honored, but the trip welcomes women across the full spectrum of Jewish practice.

Is the whole trip Jewish sites, all day, every day?+

No. The Jewish story of Portugal is the thread that ties the ten days together, not the whole itinerary. You'll also see the Serra da Estrela mountains, the Douro Valley's vineyards, Porto's UNESCO old town, and the wild Arrábida coastline — the same highlights (and a few well-chosen hidden gems) any well-planned Portugal trip would include. Think of it less as a heritage tour and more as Portugal, fully experienced, with an added layer of meaning most trips leave out.

How large is the group?+

Intentionally small. This is a founding cohort, capped to keep the group intimate enough for real conversation and connection — not a coach-bus tour.

What's included?+

Accommodations, all group experiences and guides, most meals, and ground transportation between cities. International flights are not included. Full details are shared once you request your spot.

Can I bring a friend?+

Yes — many women come with a close friend from their community. Others come solo and leave with a group of new ones. Both are common.
